We are Sarah + Laura, two wives, and now mums, who have been together since March 2009. As we are an international couple, we set up this blog in 2011 originally to share our travel and daily lives with friends and family around the world. Over time it has grown with us through personal highlights such as our coming out stories, documented our wedding planning and big day, our move from London to Birmingham UK, Sarah’s pregnancy and the birth and milestones of our daughter, Annabelle, in July 2018. We have been lucky enough to work with some fantastic people and brands (check out our ‘Work With Us’ page!), and have worked to normalise the daily lives of a same sex couple, and a two mum family. On top of this, we have found a wonderful and supportive community of friends through the blog and social media, around the world!
Sarah is from Reading, in England, her loves (as well as Laura) include potatoes -a meal simply isn’t a meal without them- cheesy music, musicals, relaxing baths and long country dog walks. Sarah is our main blogger, does most of our Instagram Stories and Twitter, and tends to write any articles we are asked to put together for other sites. Sarah works full time as the head of a team of relationship managers at a company based in London, and she loves playing netball weekly with her team, the Netchix.
Laura is from Boise, Idaho in the USA. As well as her lovely wife, Laura loves cooking and baking, planning holidays and events, and singing. She will use any excuse to dress up in costume, and often ropes the rest of the family into group outfits! Laura does most of the rest of our social media – Instagramming, taking pictures, editing posts and photos, and liaising with brands and people to work with. She works full time as an Office Manager, and is part of an LGBT+ choir in Birmingham.
In 2008, we both moved to London (Sarah from Reading, Laura from Idaho) and started work at the same company on the same day. But strangely enough, we didn’t like each other when we first met! It took six months of working long weekend events together for us to admit that actually, we were a pretty great team. We became inseparable and in March 2009, at a friend’s birthday, we fell in love.
On a date in those early months, we discussed how we’d both wanted to live in a different country for a bit – and before we knew it, we were making plans to move to Sydney, Australia – where we spent most of 2010 working part time, seeing amazing sights, visiting family and friends, and reading books on the beach. We spent all day every day together and it still wasn’t enough, and it was during this time we realised that together we were something special.
When we moved back to London the following year, we were lucky enough to live in a little Thames-side flat in Fulham, which we loved and was the base for the next few years of travelling, date nights, going to the West End theatre and trying new restaurants – all of our favourite things. We got engaged on a trip to Laura’s hometown of Boise, Idaho, in December 2012, and started planning our wedding!
It turned out that our wedding (in a mountain town in Idaho) wasn’t going to be legal, as it fell in the short period of time in 2014 where the states could decide whether or not to legalise same sex marriage, so we decided to have a little legal ceremony here in the UK on the first day same-sex marriage was legal. On the 29th March 2014 we became the first female couple to be married in Westminster! It was an amazing historic day. As part of this, we were also on BBC’s The One Show, in the Sunday Times, in The Sun, and even ended up in a newspaper in Laura’s home state!
Our wedding day, 28th June 2014, was a wonderful sunny day set at a cabin in Garden Valley, Idaho, in the mountains and next to a river. We were surrounded by family and friends, and best of all, we got to spend the whole day together! Our wedding was pink and purple, girly and themed around some of our favourite places that we’d travelled together. Laura’s dad officiated the ceremony, Sarah’s mum walked her down the aisle, and that day we became ‘The Smiths’. A dream come true!
As a new family, we moved to Birmingham and bought our first house – we wanted space and a garden so we could get a dog. We added Bisbee the cockapoo to our family in December 2014. She is the most human dog you’ll ever meet, so loving and calm, and a real part of our family.
We successfully underwent IVF treatment in October 2017, and Sarah was lucky enough to have a straightforward pregnancy. We both loved her being pregnant, it just flew so quickly! It was a really special time in our lives. In July 2018 Annabelle made her appearance into the world via C-section, and she has been the light of our lives ever since. She is independent and headstrong, funny and clever – we plan to show her by example how to be a strong and kind woman! In her short time here she has travelled to Norway and New York City, as well as Wales, Scotland and to other places within the UK. We hope to show her as much of the world and different cultures as we can as she grows up, because travel has always been such an important part of our family.
Where to next? We have settled into working full time and being Mums, and are doing our best to find a balance so we spend as much time with Annabelle as possible while still having a bit of time to ourselves where possible. We are planning trips and saving for them, thinking about trying to add another baby at some point, but mostly, we are enjoying the little moments as well as the big adventures.
